The Saparan Bekakak Tradition in Mount Gamping, Sleman, Yogyakarta, is one of the cultural treasures that the local community continues to preserve. This tradition is held annually in the month of Sapar according to the Javanese calendar as an expression of gratitude to God Almighty and a plea for protection and prosperity for the local community. This study examines the religious values inherent in each stage of the Saparan Bekakak Tradition. The qualitative research method uses data collection techniques, including observation, (...) in-depth interviews, and literature studies. Data analysis is conducted descriptively to identify and understand the symbolism and religious meanings in the ceremony's processions. The results show that the Saparan Bekakak Tradition embodies various religious values reflected in the ceremony's symbols, specific rituals, and the community's beliefs in spiritual power. Each stage of the procession, from preparation to execution to closure, holds profound religious significance closely related to local beliefs and wisdom. These values encompass respect for ancestors, gratitude to God, and requests for blessings and protection for the community. This study provides an essential contribution to documenting and understanding the religious values within the Saparan Bekakak Tradition, which can serve as a foundation for efforts to preserve local culture and traditions. Thus, the results of this research are expected to enrich the understanding of Indonesia's cultural wealth and support efforts to protect this valuable cultural heritage. (shrink)

For the past three decades or so, the field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) has shed light on the interrelationship between modern science and technology, on one side, and contemporary society, on the other. A majority of this knowledge and insights are situated in the context of Western societies, or more precisely, in economically and technologically advanced societies in Western Europe and North America. However, STS has much to offer to the discourse of science and technology in the Global (...) South, a territory characterized by developmental processes. Insights from different schools of thoughts in STS are arguably not only relevant but also applicable to unveil the root cause of problems that many developing societies are facing today. To make this possible, an STS-informed framework is developed to replace the Triple Helix model, which is currently a dominant perspective that prompts how science, technology, and innovation are structurally organized in the developing world. Two steps are taken in this agenda. First, limitations of the Triple Helix are exposed, and second, a new approach drawing on STS concepts is offered as an alternative model that takes into account structural, cultural, and epistemological features of technoscience. Both the continuity of the history of Ottoman thought with Islamic thought and its relationship with the "new" movements of thought that emerged in the Western world have not yet been analyzed on a solid ground. In particular, the connection that Ottoman scholars established or failed to establish with the developments in the Western has been handled with various biased and superficial evaluations. One of the critical points that will contribute to a meaningful discussion of this issue is the translation (...) and commentary of Ioannes Cottunius' partial commentary and partial summarization of Aristotle's Physics into Arabic under the title al-Taʿlīm al-s̱ālis̱ by Asʿad al-Yānyawī as a member of the translation committee that established in the Tulip Period. In this study I will share some observations on why this work on Aristotle's physics was chosen for translation at a time when the new understanding of physics was thought to have become widespread in Europe, and whether the translation contains a new interpretation beyond a mere transmission. These determinations, which also include the criticism of some readings in the modern literature, will be largely based on the introduction (muqaddima) of the manuscript. (shrink)

Indonesia, an archipelagic country with 17 000 islands with 281 million inhabitants, is a democratic country with Islam as the major religion. Currently, Indonesia is the second country with the largest Muslim population in the world. The Islamic tradition in Indonesia has assimilated and intersected with the richness and diversity of Indonesian culture. This is reflected in the use and meaning of Islamic concepts in Indonesia, such as ikhtiar. Ikhtiar is important to Indonesian Muslims and may have profound ethical implications (...) in palliative care situations. This makes it a relevant term to understand for healthcare professionals and adds to our vocabulary in medical ethics. This column will demonstrate the meaning and origin of ikhtiar, how it may be used in a palliative care setting, and its relationship with other concepts. The word ikhtiar is etymologically derived from Arabic اِخْتِيَار ( iḵhtiyār ) and is included in the Official Dictionary of Bahasa Indonesia. It means ‘free choice’ in Arabic, emphasising the capacity of mankind to determine their own course of action rather than predestination. However, in Indonesia, ikhtiar has a more specific nuance as a verb, meaning ‘making an effort’. It denotes that, as a consequence of having free will, humans can choose the goal which they perceive to be the best, and subsequently, make an effort to reach that goal. İslam dünyasında erken dönemde kaleme alınan bu türdeki eserlerden biri de müellifin tek eseri olarak günümüze gelmiş ve şöhreti ile müellifini geride bırakmış olan Muhammed b. Ahmed el-Hârizmî’nin (...) Mefâtîhu’l-‘ulûm aslı eseridir.
